Carlton North Primary School
Since its inception, Carlton North Primary School is an integral part of the local community. The school’s diverse student population has always reflected North Carlton’s changing multicultural landscape. Their current families bring a wealth of diversity to the education of their students.
The Education Department purchased the site on June 17, 1873. Classes were officially opened on July 28, 1873. The school was large in 1873, with more than four hundred pupils. Originally known as the Carlton Stockade School, it was renamed Lee St State School No. 1252 on 14 January 1879.
When the school was founded, the buildings were already in use. Even though classes were held there, they did not include schoolchildren. The building was once a prison. The building’s solid bluestone foundations were made by prisoners using stone quarried from the area known as Curtain Square. The building was home to voluntary classes that were attended by approximately two-thirds the prisoners. Schoolmasters began conducting these classes in 1859. The prisoners were released from Pentridge Prison in 1866. It was then made a home for the insane.
The building’s uncertain history makes it a poor choice for a school. It was initially intended to be a temporary solution to the rapid growth of Carlton’s population. Also, to meet the sudden increase in State School demand resulting from the 1872 ‘Free, Secular, and Compulsory Education Act, it was necessary to demolish the building. With enrolment pressure increasing and buildings in disrepair, it was decided that the school would be demolished and a new one built. It was constructed in 1877 as a central axis and two wings at the ends. It was designed in Gothic Revival style. It opened as the Administration Building on 28 June 1878.
This red brick building is typical Edwardian school architecture and has a large central hall. It houses the Junior classrooms.
In 1937, significant remodeling was done to the interior of the 1878 structure. The buildings were renovated several times in the second half century. Over time, landscaping, plantings, and the installation of play equipment were all added to the grounds.
Both buildings have seen interior changes since 2000. In 2009, the school undertook renovations to the Administration building. This included a new library and computer lab. The Administration building also offers flexible learning spaces for students in years five through six. The BER included extensive renovations to the Junior building, which was extended to meet the learning needs of Foundation through Grade 4 students.
Carlton North Primary School is proud to continue its long history of being a valuable place for learning in its community. In 2035, which is the 200th anniversary for the state of Victoria, a time capsule was placed in the east side Library wall.
