Fitzroy Community School
FCS is an alternative, independent primary school. It has its own distinctive way of operating. The school is a calm atmosphere, and great results in the same time. Students are enthusiastic about learning and are eager to go to the school. The most frequent comment guests are asked to make is that it is like a family.
At FCS the role is restricted to that of a huge, extended family. This is a deliberate decision. Everyone knows everyone, and everyone feels respected. It’s not just another place.
FCS is focused on three outcomes for its graduates and students’ success: happiness, viability, and excellence in academics. They believe that these characteristics give the best chance of living a fulfilling, happy and enjoyable life. The school’s culture encourages the attainment of these characteristics and they are thrilled that their graduates and students exhibit these qualities. The main reason for this is the emphasis they place in confidence as well as effective communication. They aren’t so often taught, but rather acquired in the daily life at school.
FCS was established in 1975 in 1976 by Philip O’Carroll and Faye Berryman in their home located at 597 Brunswick Street, North Fitzroy and continues to operate there and is fortunate to retain their passion and knowledge more than four decades afterward. FCS has another campus located situated in Normanby Avenue, Thornbury.
Purpose
The school was established to help children develop their communication abilities and confidence in themselves. English classes include speech classes, all students participate in drama and there are four performances every year.
Curriculum
The subject’s content spans broad spectrum of practical and theoretical, from ethics to the catching of pond bugs. The intimate nature of the classes and school allows for students to explore the passions of the teachers and students.
The English and Maths programs are highly flexible and structured – as is the way of teaching. The courses (known in “the Fitzroy Reading and Maths Programs”) are renowned worldwide by combining the classic abilities of punctuation, spelling and times tables, with more innovative ideas.
Another aspect of the curriculum which is often discussed is the substantial time allocated to sports in addition to the school’s dedication to competitive and contact sports.
Academic Standard
The school has a impressive academic performance. This is a result of the curriculum, as is the emphasis on self-confidence and communication skills.
Lunch
The kids do not take their lunches to school. They bring their lunch here. There is often the option of a hot dinner. This can help develop individual skills as well as a social setting.
Wednesday
Swimming in the mornings of both in summer and winter. It is the only day during the week that students are permitted to take a snack with them. 3pm – 4pm: Parents afternoon tea.
School Yard
There are two campuses: Brunswick St and Normanby Av campuses are on small home sites with small yards. Their yards are extensively used, they regularly make use of the local parks as well as creeks, along with other areas for outdoor activities.
Outward Bounding
The way of life is exciting and a sense of initiative is encouraged. there are plenty of outings and activities and camps throughout the year, and all children participate in activities.
Pluralism
There isn’t an “in” ideology within the school. They have families with diverse views and beliefs. They are tolerant of this diversity and believe that exposes children to a variety of cultures.
Road Sense
It is important to note that the Brunswick St and Normanby Av campuses are located on busy streets. Children must be aware of road hazards prior to coming and, therefore, they should not cross the roadway.
